The Bert Egan Memorial Lighthouse was a Centenary of Federation Project. Construction was complete by December 2000 and the light was first lit at midnight on 31st December 2000 as Australia’s Centenary of Federation began. A Centenary of Federation grant of $15,000 was received from the Dept. of Communications, Technology & the Arts to aid this $70,000 project.
The lenses and mechanism are from the AMSA collection and the spiral staircase is from Gabo Island lighthouse off the coast at the border of NSW and Victoria.  This replica lighthouse forms part of the Eden Killer Whale Museum galleries and is an opportunity for people to see the workings of a traditional lighthouse. Most lighthouses around the coastline of Australia have been automated and no longer have light keepers in residence. They are also mostly in remote locations and inaccessible to the general public.

Volunteer guides provide tours of the lighthouse and lantern room most weekdays.

Bert Egan

Mr Bert Egan was honorary curator at the Eden Museum from 1957 to1982. Bert single handedly attended the museum daily and delighted in telling visitors about the whaling and sleeper cutting days in this area

Museum shines with solar power

On 25 September 2008, Pyramid Power installed grid connected solar power.  This begins with 12 solar panels on the roof that produce DC
power which is then converted to AC power through a bi-directional meter.  Power not used by the museum is then fed into the grid and then
credited against any power used in times of low solar energy.  The system is expected to to generate 2 kilowats of power.  Installing solar
power will reduce costs associated with mains power, reduces the museum's carbon footprint and put power back into the grid.

The virtues of this project will become the focus of a special display and school groups will be able to see the system in action with the aid of
a wireless radio unit which reveals how much carbon has been saved and how much solar power has been generated.

The Australian Government assisted this project through the Photovoltaic Rebate Programme for Schools and Community Buildings.

Between the Flags: 100 Years of Surf Lifesaving

27 November - 1 February 2009

Developed in collaboration with Surf Life Saving Australia,
this major exhibition looks at the history of surf lifesaving,
the lifesaver as an Australian icon,
beach culture and stories of the people who patrol our beaches.

For 100 years, surf lifesavers have dedicated their time to watch over
beachgoers around Australia as we paddle, swim and surf in our oceans.
This fascinating exhibition provides an insight into the proud community of dedicated
volunteers whose bravery has helped to save over 500,000 lives in the past century.
